I know there is an on-screen keyboard which you can access on Mac OSX, however I need to add a toolbar button to launch it from within my application.

You can launch KeyboardViewerServer.app in whatever way your language does that (you do not say which) 您可以使用您的语言以任何方式启动KeyboardViewerServer.app（您不说哪个）
From Terminal: 从终端：
open -a KeyboardViewerServer
I found it in /System/Library/Components/KeyboardViewer.component/Contents/SharedSupport/KeyboardViewerServer.app 我在/System/Library/Components/KeyboardViewer.component/Contents/SharedSupport/KeyboardViewerServer.app中找到了它
