Use the following syntax:

npm install git://github.com/user/repo.git

For example:

npm install git://github.com/substack/node-mkdirp.git

Or in this case:

npm install git://github.com/jshint/jshint.git

Set the npm proxy if necessary:

npm config set proxy http://username:password@proxy.company.com:1234
npm config set https-proxy http://username:password@proxy.company.com:4567

And the git proxy if necessary:

git config --global http.proxy proxy.company.com:1234
