I personally like Sublime Text which is not on this page but has highlighting as well as a bunch of other useful features. Not sure if it is the most widely used however

James Clark's nxml mode in emacs is excellent. It's open source and widely used among emacs users. Recommended, if you've already or are willing to climb emac's learning curve.
