Question

My application uses MySQL, but I want to use H2 for testing. I added

testImplementation 'com.h2database:h2'

to gradle configuration and set

spring.datasource.driveClassName="org.h2.Driver"

in application-test.properties .

When googling around, I have seen lots of articles where things work in test but not when running the app, which isn't this case. With that said, I thought I had messed up the configuration, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

As an experiment, I changed configuration from testImplementation to implementation and updated application.properties to use H2 instead of MySQL. I then ran the app, just as I would with MySQL, and everything works. With those changes still in place, the test fails in the same way. I'm at a loss.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why org.h2.Driver can't be found during tests. Anyone see a similar situation?

• Replaced snipped stack trace with full stacktrace
• added all test properties

• updated driver line at top of the question to include quotes, which was what was actually in the properties file, it was a mistake that I had removed them when asking the question.
• added warning to properties files so that others won't copy and paste my same mistakes.

The problem had nothing to do with gradle or classloading, it was with the properties. I had

spring.datasource.driverClassName="org.h2.Driver"

but it should be

spring.datasource.driverClassName=org.h2.Driver

spring was trying to load a class called "org.h2.Driver" (the quotes are part of the class name). Things worked just fine after removing the quotes.
