I had a working application on Facebook that even made it to the App directory.

I was also facing the same problem. 我也面临着同样的问题。 A couple of month ago my application was working fine and it was an iframe based app. 几个月前，我的应用程序运行良好，并且是基于iframe的应用程序。 But suddenly its behavior was same as you discussed. 但是突然之间，它的行为与您所讨论的相同。
If you are using new FB-APi then my suggestions are that please change your facebook-application settings from developer. 如果您正在使用新的FB-APi，那么我的建议是请从开发人员更改您的facebook应用程序设置。
