Where is the .env file stored for php

Question

I am trying to figure out where the environment-file used by php to retrieve and store values using getenv/putenv methods.

I was under the impression this is stored in an .env-file. I may be wrong. Feel free to correct me.

I thought it was in the same directory as the website (let's say www or web), but nope.

Thanks to feedback from those who commented I ended up using the dotEnv package. This worked smoothly.
