Keep getting weird node error when using node_install

Question

I am trying to npm install my serverless project but I keep getting a weird build error no matter what I try. It stops on this node-gyp and I tried to install it and it went okay but it still throws this issue.

I am on Mac OSX Big Sur. I installed node using brew: brew install node

TL;DR: Try running xcode-select --install but if that doesn't solve the problem, read on.

node-gyp is used when a native addon is being built. So if you're installing something that is running node-gyp , it's trying to compile something.

The error message indicates you don't have Xcode installed. You may not need to install Xcode though. You my just need to run xcode-select . See https://github.com/nodejs/node-gyp/blob/master/macOS_Catalina.md . That doc is for Catalina, but the error message described matches exactly: gyp: No Xcode or CLT version detected! . And there are no more recent instructions for Big Sur, so it seems worth a try.

If xcode-select --install doesn't solve the problem, see the doc linked in that previous paragraph. There are at least two other things to try.
