what is evaluation_periods in terraform aws_cloudwatch_metric_alarm?

I see the definition in terraform docs for aws_cloudwatch_metric_alarm paramter evaluation_periods is "The number of periods over which data is compared to the specified threshold." I don't understand what this means though. Can someone please explain it? Maybe an example.

Its explained in AWS docs :
Evaluation Periods is the number of the most recent periods, or data points , to evaluate when determining alarm state.
An example with explenation is also given in the docs.
