How to create an animated rope in HTML, JS, CSS

Question

Im looking do develop a programmatically generated, dynamic rope using web technologies.

If anyone can offer some high-level advice or ideas on how to approach this that would be helpful.

I was thinking I could generate and animate the rope manipulating a sine wave function tied to a canvas or SVG element.
