OpenInviter - Facebook plugin - getMyContacts stopped working

I recently tried to use the Facebook plugin for OpenInviter (installed as a Joomla 1.5 component, I might add). At first I could get a user's contacts but couldn't send any messages. Then I was able to send messages using a modified version of the plugin that I found in answer to a previous question, namely send invites to facebook using openinviter . Today however it doesn't seem possible to retrieve the user's contacts. Stepping through the code, it seems to me that the problem is that ajax/social_graph/fetch?__a=1 gives back a 404 error. Has anyone else stumbled upon this? Right now I'm thinking of trying to use the Graph API, but then we need to obtain an access token first and that makes things more complicated in the plugin. Better ideas, anyone? Thank you all

Unfortunately, facebook has changed its policies due to developers abusing the send message API. We're no longer able to use Openinviter and send a message to your facebook contacts.
