Javascript: Design Best Practices

Question

I'm creating a javascript object, and I want to know the best practice in doing so (for my needs).

What I want to do is create an Email namespace, which has some functionality built in, but also the ability to create an instance of an Email.

What I want to have:

1. The ability to call Email.Validate(string)
2. The ability to create an instance of an Email object that fits my business needs (has the following properties):
   1. A database id (undefined if this is new)
   2. The email address
   3. A person's name (to associate with the address)
   4. etc . . .

Now what I have laid out is just an idea, so maybe someone has a better design pattern to use. But I'm looking for an idea of how to have functionality for an email the isn't unique to a specific email instance (validation, etc), and also the ability to have an email object which can use this functionality, with a focus on a good structure/design.

I hope this makes sense, but if not please ask for clarification.

It sounds like you want to have a static function of the Email object, but still be able to instantiate instances of it. How about something like:

Email.Validate = function (address)
{
   if(address.length > 3)
      window.alert('Valid!');
};

//Calling code

Email.Validate('Bar@Bar.com');
</script>

If I'm not understanding any part of the question, let me know and I can try to clarify things.

Using prototypes is definitely a better design.

Constructor

   function Email( email, name, id ){
    this.email = email;
    this.name = name;
    this.id = id;
    }

Instance method

Email.prototype.setId = function(id){
this.id = id;
};

Static method

Email.Validate = function(){};

setId is only in Email instances while Email.Validate() can be called just like that.
