Beginner question, when I select a face, shift and select another face for extrusion the second section bounces back.

Hold Ctrl and select the faces you want to extrude.按住 Ctrl 并选择要挤出的面。 Ctrl allows multiple selections in 3ds max. Ctrl 允许在 3ds max 中进行多项选择。
