Use a UILocalNotification when your app is in the background.

UILocalNotification *notification = [[UILocalNotification alloc] init];
notification.alertBody = @"Your message";
notification.alertAction = @"Open app";
[[UIApplication sharedApplication] presentLocalNotificationNow:notification];
