Support on Payroll Code Error?

Im getting a few errors from this code, can anyone explain what seems to be the issue? Thanks! This program is supposed to calculate the payroll for a declared (counter) amount of employees. Note: This is Python 3.3

Also: please feel free to make any improvements you like! I am looking to learn!

You "set" the status like this:

status = input("Are they single(1) or married(2)? \\n")

The type() of status is going to be a string. When you attempt to compare it in your computeTaxAmount() method, you either need to turn it into an int or compare it to a string, otherwise it will never be True and taxAmount will never be set.

Ex:

if status == 1:

becomes:

if status == '1':

You have other issues in your code as well. In Python, '&' is the bitwise AND operator, not the logical AND. elif grossPay > 42 & grossPay <= 214 for example needs to become elif grossPay > 42 and grossPay <= 214 .
