        AudioManager am = (AudioManager)getSystemService(Context.AUDIO_SERVICE);
        am.setRingerMode(AudioManager.RINGER_MODE_SILENT);

there is also vibrate mode and normal mode

       am.setRingerMode(AudioManager.RINGER_MODE_VIBRATE);
       am.setRingerMode(AudioManager.RINGER_MODE_NORMAL);
