IllegalReferenceCount in my custom netty Decoder

I am getting just started with Netty (Using 4.0.15.Final). I want to read messages from an existing hardware device that talks a proprietary protocol. I have implemented this as follows:

I have a unit test that works fine like this:

ByteBuf input = Unpooled.buffer();
input.writeBytes( .... );
Xml2StreamProtocolDecoder decoder = new Xml2StreamProtocolDecoder();
EmbeddedChannel channel = new EmbeddedChannel( decoder );
channel.writeInbound( input );
assertThat(channel.inboundMessages()).isNotNull().hasSize( 2 );

However, when I add a 2nd decoder (which is a standard Netty class) in the pipeline to convert the bytes into a String like this:

Then the unit test fails with the following exception:

Why is this happening? Am I doing something wrong in my Xml2StreamProtocolDecoder ?
