Php: Error installing v8js on laravel homestead ( vagrant ) on ubuntu

Question

Hello i am having trouble installing v8js on laravel homestead ( vagrant )

After looking at these 2 tuts

1. Install v8js on Linux (works with Homestead) !

2. Installing PHPv8js on Ubuntu !

I Fired up the below commands

$ sudo apt-get install libv8-dev libv8-dbg g++ cpp
$ sudo pecl install v8js-0.1.3

Also note that i typed /opt/v8 when it asked me for the installation prefix of libv8

When i run first command i get this error

When i run 2nd command , it asks me to provide the installation prefix of libv8 ... i type /opt/v8 and getting the below error

I've found a fix for this; we should checkout the version 5.1.99 as the latest v8js build seems broken.

Current Solution

The commands are as follows:

Install build-essential if you haven't already:

sudo apt-get install build-essential

Install libicu-dev if you haven't already:

sudo apt-get install libicu-dev
cd /tmp

Install depot_tools first (needed for source checkout)

git clone https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/tools/depot_tools.git
export PATH=`pwd`/depot_tools:"$PATH"

Download v8

fetch v8
cd v8

checkout working version:

git checkout 5.1.99
gclient sync

use libicu of operating system

export GYP_DEFINES="use_system_icu=1"

Build (with internal snapshots)

export GYPFLAGS="-Dv8_use_external_startup_data=0"

Force gyp to use system-wide ld.gold

export GYPFLAGS="${GYPFLAGS} -Dlinux_use_bundled_gold=0"
make native library=shared snapshot=on -j8

Install to /usr

sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib /usr/include
sudo cp out/native/lib.target/lib*.so /usr/lib/
sudo cp -R include/* /usr/include

... same for V8 < 5.2.51, libv8_libplatform.a is built in tools/gyp directory

Compile php-v8js itself

cd /tmp
git clone https://github.com/phpv8/v8js.git

Then add extension=v8js.so to your php.ini file.

I ran into the same issue while installing v8js on a Ubuntu 16 VM (using vagrant/Homestead). Instead of compiling from source, here's how I solve this issue:

 1. sudo apt-get install g++ cpp 
 2. sudo add-apt-repository
 3. sudo apt-get update 
 4. sudo pecl install v8js
 5. sudo service php7.1-fpm restart
