HikariCP pool running out of connections

Question

I have the following in my application.properties file

spring.datasource.hikari.minimum-idle= 10
spring.datasource.hikari.maximum-pool-size= 30
spring.datasource.hikari.connectionTimeout=35000
spring.datasource.hikari.idle-timeout= 45000
spring.datasource.hikari.max-lifetime= 60000

The problem is I am always running into pool issue an my app stops responding. I have made sure to close all the connections to the database in my DAOs. This happens in the production environnement.

You have a pool size of 30. So your app is probably handling 30 or more requests concurrently, and the requests are occupying connections from the pool. Even if you close the connection when you're done with it, if the code is still working on a request, you could easily use all of the connections.

Basically, if requests are coming in faster than they can be completed, you'll use up all the database connections.

So you either need to throttle requests somehow (maybe a proxy layer), or else optimize the handling of the request so it completes faster and then it can return connections to the pool to keep up with the rate of requests.

It's pretty common that a DAO is holding onto a connection too long because the SQL query is not optimized. That usually means the query doesn't have the right indexes. Sometimes even if the query has been optimized, it's simply working on a large enough dataset that it can't do the query fast enough. Another scenario is that the app server or the database server is overloaded, and it makes every query run slowly.

You need to find out where the bottleneck is, and do what you can to increase the throughput.

You are setting minimum idle which isn't recommended by hikaricp:

minimumIdle This property controls the minimum number of idle connections that HikariCP tries to maintain in the pool. If the idle connections dip below this value and total connections in the pool are less than maximumPoolSize, HikariCP will make a best effort to add additional connections quickly and efficiently. However, for maximum performance and responsiveness to spike demands, we recommend not setting this value and instead allowing HikariCP to act as a fixed size connection

I don't know exactly what you're doing, but this sounds suspicious:

There's a difference between closing a database connection and returning it to the Connection Pool (Hikari in this case).

Since you're using a Connection Pool (CP) and Spring Boot you should not really worry about handling your database connections. They should be managed automatically.
If you enforce closing of a connection, you interfere with the work of the CP. It's the CP's job to maintain a set of database connections and to reuse these connections for multiple requests.

However, closed connections would explain the error you see: No unused database connections are available to the current request in time, so a timeout occurs. A cause of this could be you eagerly closing connections while Hikari is not able to create new ones fast enough;-)
