What are the reasons for having several data marts instead of only one central data warehouse. What are the tradeoffs here?
According to my understanding, one of the reasons should be the following:
- If one of the many data marts loses its connection, breaks down or other data marts are available. In the case of the data warehouse system, it would be directly unavailable and the employees would no longer be able to access the system.

A data warehouse is made of multiple data marts. A data mart focuses on a business process: Sales, Procurement, HR etc. Redundancy is a database administration topic to ensure the system permanent availability.
