Using mockito to mock server for client unit tests

Question

I'm trying to write unit tests for Java based gRPC client where the server is remote.

All the examples I've seen use a local gRPC server for writing client unit test cases.

How can I mock the server so my client unit test cases are able to run.

        MyProtoResponse response = stub.myProtoRequest(ReqPayload.newBuilder()

                .setNum2(b)
                .build());

        this.channel.shutdown();
        return response.getSum();
    }
}

Here is the code of my test class. But it throws an error saying it's trying to connect to the remote_url .

The below code throws java.lang.NullPointerException .

For cases like this, I tend to add a second, package private constructor:

public class MyProtoClient {
    private final ManagedChannel channel;

    public MyProtoClient() {
        this(ManagedChannelBuilder.forAddress("{remote_url}", remote_port)
                .usePlaintext()
                .build());
    }

    MyProtoClient(ManagedChannel channel) {
        this.channel = channel;
    }

    ...

This allows you to call the second constructor with the mocked ManagedChannel . I prefer not to use @InjectMocks at all for cases like this, and create the object myself:

    @BeforeEach
    void setUp() throws Exception {
        // managedChannel can still be annotated with @Mock
        myProtoClient = new MyProtoClient(managedChannel);
    }

Note that the stub is still not mocked, but its backing channel is. You may have to do some more low-level mocking to get your test to work.

I'm not an expert with gRPC, but my guess is the following:

In your test you're using a mocked ManagedChannel , but at some point gRPC must be trying to instantiate a ClientCall object from it. As it's a basic mock, it's simply returning null , which causes a java.lang.NullPointerException when gRPC is executing io.grpc.stub.ClientCalls.startCall(ClientCalls.java:341) (from your stacktrace)

I have 2 suggestions:

  1. try using a non-mocked ManagedChannel in your tests, or mock the required methods to provide a non-null ClientCall to gRPC
  2. try to adapt your tests to mimic the official gRPC example project ( the client class / the test class )
