beaglebone black debian pip not working

I tried to install some python packages like numpy and pyserial using pip but I kept getting this error:

File "/usr/bin/pip", line 9, in <module>
    load_entry_point('pip==1.5.6', 'console_scripts', 'pip')()

ImportError: cannot import name IncompleteRead

Try using apt-get instead of pip.
