Spring Boot won't find URL

Question

I'm trying to run the tutorial on Integrating Angular 2 with Spring Boot, JWT and CORS, Part 1 . I've a project that compiles in my STS (Spring Tool Suite) environment, but it won't talk to the http://localhost:8080/heroes link the site recommends.

I'm trying to not change anything the author wrote, but I did in these ways:

• For data.sql I prepended a CREATE TABLE statement. That made the H2 database filling succeed.
• I put RepositoryConfig.java and HeroRepository.java in the heroes package. The website appears to recommend the com.examples package.

When I executed the STS "Run As", "Spring Boot App" command I get these mappings from the Spring Boot output:

If I choose http://localhost:8080 or http://localhost:8080/profile I get back something that looks like a HATEOAS response. But an attempt at http://localhost:8080/heroes gives back a 404 response.

The program to this point has only four Java files: Hero, HeroRepository, RepositoryConfig and BackEndApplication. Here is the start of HeroRepository:

I've looked around for help and found it here on StackOverflow: Spring Boot: Cannot access REST controller on localhost (404)

The problem with the tutorial code is that the class of the @SpringBootApplication is of a "lower" package -- different one, at least -- than that of the code bearing the REST classes. In the tutorial, that means heroes.backend.BackEndApplication won't let the program find heroes.HeroRepository.

I made the class to be heroes.BackEndApplication and have success:
