Python 2.7 TypeError: iteration over a 0-d array

Question

I am trying to convert numpy array with dtype Unicode to float array. Is this the wrong way or what am i doing wrong

The error is raised by a django process. My guess is that this is a json formatted string.

array(u'[0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 ...]') was probably produced from '[0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 ...]'. That's a string that looks like a list, but is actually just a long string. Your u_vec is a 0 dimensional array containing one long string.

json.loads can parse such a string, producing a list. Making a valid array from such a list is trivial:

In [77]: astr='[1,2,3,4]'
In [78]: import json
In [79]: alist = json.loads(astr)
In [80]: alist
Out[80]: [1, 2, 3, 4]
In [81]: np.array(alist)
Out[81]: array([1, 2, 3, 4])

You state that you currently have a Unicode array and that you want a float array, I will assume that you used numpy.array to create said array (based on the used tags).

The array that you specify is:

import numpy as np
foo = np.array(u'[1,2,3,4]',dtype='<U3015')

However, if you try to access an element of this array by using print foo[0] you will see that this does not work because you are basically trying to define the datatype twice, don't do that. You should actually define the array as follows:

import numpy as np
foo = np.array([1,2,3,4],dtype='<U3015')
print foo[2], type[2] # <-- These are to show that the array can be accessed and that individual elements are of Unicode type.

Now to your question where you want to convert this array to an array of floats. This is where I have to challenge your question and ask what is preventing you from just defining the array initially as an array of floats, along the lines of:

import numpy as np
foo = np.array([1,2,3,4],dtype='float64')

Alternatively, if you do receive the array as a Unitype array you can just change it as follows:

foo = np.array([1,2,3,4],dtype='<U3015')
foo = np.array(foo,dtype='float64')
