Why is pip install MySQL-python==1.2.5 failing with C compile error?

I'm on a Macbook running MacOS High Sierra (Version 10.13.4) I'm running a virtual environment.

Inside the virtual environment, I'm doing a pip install MySQL-python. But its failing with the C compile error shown below.

What's the reason for this error and how can I fix it?

$ pip install MySQL-python==1.2.5

Failed building wheel for MySQL-python

I have cut out some of the warnings for brevity. You can see the full output here .

It looks like it's picking up the header from an incompatible installation of mariadb.

You probably need to install mysql and/or mysqlclient .

see for details: Install mysqlclient for Django Python on Mac OS X Sierra
