Material Design Colors Consistency and Recommendation

I'm leading a design systems team and we are going to be working on consolidating our color palette.

I'm interested to know if you have any recommendations on color standards. Currently there are 3-4 variations on how colors match depending on the Material Design tool. There are palettes that favor more hue-shift+saturation style color transitions vs. ones that promote adding black and white values. I'm unclear what's prescribed. Please advise!

Sebastien Gabriel and Dave Crossland recommended I ask here.

Thanks!

Thanks for using Material Design, and for your question. We have a few different tools, and that can be confusing.

I recommend that you use our tonal palette generator in order to generate tonal variations of your brand color palette. We use an algorithmic adjustment that takes into account hue, chroma, and lightness to create tone variations. https://material.io/design/color/the-color-system.html#tools-for-picking-colors

Our Material Sketch plugin also uses the same palette generator tool in order to create tonal values.

Would love to provide feedback about your team's work in case you may find that helpful.

J.
